The Silent Echoes

By Danah Mawallil Quijano

In a delivery room, the sound reverberates,
Excruciating pain in her body radiates.
She needs to hold her breath, as she pushes
Her body’s energy all have been exhausted

And when she thought the relief is coming,
No! It’s not yet over, she needs more pushing.
Breathe in and out as she was instructed.
To keep her silent cries of pain, to concentrate.

She’s sleepless and tired, and it’s not enough.
The life inside her, getting weak as she is.
Under the light and scrutinizing eyes.
They’ll cut her open to save both mother and baby’s lives.

As the sound of a cry from a small body echoes
A weak smile appears on her lips, feeling grateful.
As if the pain is no longer there anymore.
The small life she waited for 9 months was worth it all.
